HOW WE GROW
The Environmental Difference
Cannabis farming has become highly resource intensive, using high watt lights, soil-less hydroponic mediums, significant amount of water, and unsustainable mined nutrients all leaving a huge carbon footprint. Big Water Hemp was founded on the the idea of creating something different — a cannabis company that grows in living soil, limiting its environmental footprint by producing less waste.
Since hemp had not been grown in Florida in 80 years, the challenge was on. With Danny P’s experience in Colorado watching countless farmers try and transition into hemp with great genetics but no understanding of hemp practices or infrastructure, he focused on cultivating a company that would sell seeds or clones with the necessary re-education and support farmers need to be successful.
The next hurdle was finding and breeding genetics that would be successful in Florida’s tropical climate. This brought the newest team member, Carter, who has developed proprietary genetics for multiple businesses in Colorado and is now working with Big Water to do the same.
The Living Soil System
At Big Water Organics, we cultivate living soil growing method focused on the microbial life that feeds our plants. Just as human beings have a microbiome, so does the soil. Plants get energy from the sun (lights) and release carbon and sugars they create into the soil through their roots. Carbon and sugar then attract bacteria and fungus which in turn attract and are eaten by protozoa. The waste extruded from these organisms feed the plants. These micro-organisms make up the microbiome of the soil and help break down the organic matter and minerals in the soil that plants need to thrive.
Many growers grow in soil-less mediums and force feed plants with synthetic nutrients and chemicals. This soil-less medium is used for one plant life cycle and then thrown away creating waste. At Big Water Organics, we respect every element of the process. That’s why we cultivate a living soil system constantly re-using our soil and improving its microbiome. We add organic matter between plant life cycles, but it’s always organic material from our compost system. During the plants life cycle, we brew teas to keep the soil’s microbiome balanced and fed.
